Your AC has been fighting a losing battle for the last fifty miles, blowing lukewarm air against your face as you cut through the vast, arid expanse of the Mojave desert. The landscape is a monotonous blur of dry, yellow-white scrub brush and distant red rock mesas. Heat waves violently distort the horizon, turning the long black ribbon of asphalt ahead into a shimmering, watery mirage. Then, a shape materializes out of the haze on the right shoulder. Against your better judgement, you stop and quietly hope this woman isn't a serial killer.
