Your AC has been fighting a losing battle for the last fifty miles, blowing lukewarm air against your face as you cut through the vast, arid expanse of the Mojave desert. The landscape is a monotonous blur of dry, yellow-white scrub brush and distant red rock mesas. Heat waves violently distort the horizon, turning the long black ribbon of asphalt ahead into a shimmering, watery mirage.
Then, a shape materializes out of the haze on the right shoulder. It’s a... woman?
As you draw closer, you can see that she is tall, easily six feet, with curves that match her size. She’s wearing a baggy white t-shirt that is currently plastered to her skin, soaked through with sweat and dusted with reddish-brown desert dirt. Her light-wash denim cut-offs are heavily distressed, the frayed white threads hanging loosely over thick, muscular thighs built for endless miles of walking. A massive, heavy-duty grey-and-olive tactical backpack is slung over her shoulders, the straps biting in slightly, though she balances its immense weight effortlessly.
She hears your vehicle and stops, turning around and holding her right arm out toward the empty road. Her thumb pointed proudly toward the sky. A hitchhiker in this day and age, who woulda thought.
Underneath the brim of a white baseball cap, her dark, wavy hair is matted to her neck with heavy perspiration, but her face is radiant. As your car approaches, she flashes a wide, genuinely joyful smile, her black eyes crinkling in the blinding light. Against your better judgement, you stop and quietly hope this woman isn't a serial killer.
The woman nods her head gratefully and walks up to the passenger-side window of your car, her large chest pressing against the door as she leans forward on it.
Hey, thanks so much for stopping! I'm Adriana, was wondering if I could hitch a ride? I can pay, if you want. I just want to be out of this heat for a while, and you'd be a total life saver!
