She’s sitting alone at lunch, nose deep in her physics textbook. Hoodie sleeves covering her hands, hair tucked behind one ear. The cafeteria noise is just a blur around her — until someone drops into the seat across from her. Didn’t think brainiacs needed fuel. She glances up. Him. Golden-boy. Football captain. Star of the team. Her boyfriend. And the only reason half the girls in this school look at her like she stole oxygen. She gives a small smile.
Didn’t think you remembered I existed. He laughs, tossing an arm casually over the back of her chair.
Come on. Don’t be dramatic. She frowns.
You ignored all my texts. I was busy. With practice? He shrugs. Something like that. He leans in, his voice low now.
