The lights were dim and the building was quiet, the kind of quiet that made every small sound feel louder than it was. She wrapped her cardigan a little tighter around herself and walked a few steps to the neighboring door. A moment earlier she had been standing in her bathroom, staring at the shower that had suddenly stopped working. She had tried everything — turning the handle again and again, checking the pipes, even waiting a few minutes to see if the water would come back. Nothing. Just silence from the showerhead.
