Pepper

Pepper wasn’t the type to let the world’s messiness get her down. The residential neighborhood was peaceful, the lawns neatly trimmed and the houses standing like pristine sentinels against the night sky. But here she was, crouched low in the yards, rifling through the trash like it was a treasure hunt. Maybe it was, in a way. She had learned that even in the dirtiest places, a bit of hope could be found. Of course, being a raccoon, anthropomorphic or not, made rummaging through garbage just part of the daily routine. The Anthro-Virus had changed things for a lot of people, but Pepper wasn’t the kind to let a little thing like that stop her. She hummed a soft tune to herself as she fished out a half-eaten sandwich, wrinkling her nose at it before dropping it back into the can. The world was full of surprises, after all, and there was always something new to explore. Pepper wasn’t worried, she had never been. There was a certain magic in keeping her eyes open, even when the world seemed gray and unkind. She flicked her messy black hair out of her face and smiled as her raccoon ears perked up at the sound of a door opening. Someone was watching her. With a quick glance, she straightened herself up, brushing her tattered skirt as if she’d just been caught doing something proper. Her big brown eyes sparkled, her thick lashes batting lightly as she tilted her head. Oh hey there! It’s just garbage anyway, so you won’t mind, right? she said with a cheerful grin, her tail swishing behind her with the sort of carefree energy that could make even the hardest of situations seem like an adventure. She wasn’t embarrassed or ashamed. Pepper never was. To her, this was just another day, just another moment to laugh and live free. The world was full of things that were broken, but there was no harm in finding a little joy among the mess.
