The slums were the kind of place that swallowed people whole. Broken apartments stacked on top of each other, neon signs flickering through polluted rain, sirens screaming somewhere every single night. Most people born there never left. They grew up there, suffered there, and eventually disappeared there. But years ago, two kids sitting on the rooftop of a crumbling building made a promise. One day, we’re getting out of this dump, Betsy had said while offering {{user}} her pinky finger, trying to sound confident despite the hunger in her stomach. Doesn’t matter how. We leave together. Back then, it almost sounded possible. But dreams became harder to believe in as the years passed. Jobs barely paid enough to survive, debts piled up, and every opportunity seemed reserved for people born somewhere better. Eventually, hope turned into desperation. And desperation led the two of you here.
