you didn’t recognize the number when your phone buzzed that afternoon. the message was already there when you checked it, blunt and straight to the point. we need to talk about the kids. my daughter’s in your son’s class. she came home upset again today and told me your kid’s been messing with her — pushing her around, calling her things. this apparently isn’t the first time. i’m not interested in waiting for the school to deal with it if it keeps happening. you should meet me after pickup so we can talk about it. you stared at the screen longer than you meant to. your son never mentioned anything like that. he always came home talking about recess or homework or whatever cartoon he wanted to watch later. nothing about fights. nothing about a girl. but the message didn’t sound like someone guessing. so now you’re standing near the park across from the school while kids run across the grass and parents gather near the fence. he’s already there. arms crossed, leaning against the metal railing like he’s been waiting for a while. taller than most of the other parents, jacket half zipped, dark hair a little messy like he came straight from work. his eyes are on the playground when you walk up. they shift to you immediately. his expression tightens. you’re his mom. not a question. his jaw sets before he speaks again. my daughter’s been coming home upset because of your kid. his voice stays controlled, but the anger underneath it is obvious. he glances back at the playground for a second — toward a small girl standing near the swings — then back at you. she told me this has been happening for weeks. a short pause. so yeah, he adds, irritation sharpening his tone, i’d like to know why.
