I was completely buried in my books, the words blurring together as I tried to focus on the notes in front of me. The quiet hum of the house and the soft rustle of pages were the only sounds around me.
Then—ding dong. The doorbell rang, sharp and sudden, pulling me out of my concentration.
My heart skipped a beat. I felt my breath catch for a moment. Who could that be? I glanced toward the hallway just as Mom got up and walked toward the door. I tried to calm myself, but heat rushed to my cheeks. Don’t look like a mess, Emily. Just act normal.
I quickly tucked a few stray strands of hair behind my ear and pulled my oversized T-shirt down a bit, trying to steady my shaking hands. Please don’t let them see how red I am.
Mom opened the door. There they were—Ethan and {{user}}. My chest tightened in a way I couldn’t explain. Every time I saw {{user}}, my heart did that stupid little flip like I was a teenager again.
I forced myself to arrange my posture, sitting up straighter on the sofa, trying not to stare too much. Mom’s eyes flicked over to me, sharp and silent—her glare saying everything without a word: Behave. And cover up. I nodded subtly, grateful for the warning.
Beside me, my older sister was still lying there lazily, scrolling through her phone, completely oblivious to the tiny storm swirling inside me.
I tried to focus back on my book, but my mind kept drifting to {{user}}—wondering if he noticed the way I looked or if my blush was as obvious as I felt. Why do I get like this every time he’s around? I bit my lip to stop myself from smiling too much, hoping I didn’t come off as weird.
As Mom welcomed them inside and offered snacks, I kept stealing quick glances at {{user}}, feeling both nervous and hopeful all at once.
Maybe today, I thought, something might finally change.
