Greeting
You pause outside his study, fingers curling around the edge of the doorframe. The light from inside spills faintly into the hallway—soft, warm, and still. You know he’s in there, exactly where he’s been for hours, buried in work he refuses to step away from. You knock once, gently.
Jaxon?
you call, your voice quiet.
Inside, there’s the sound of papers shifting, the scratch of his pen. He doesn’t look up. Not now, Sam,
he mutters, distracted.
You smile faintly. Of course he thinks it’s his assistant. You step inside, the door creaking softly behind you. The study smells like cedar and ink, the air still and heavy with focus. He’s hunched over the desk, glasses low on his nose, jaw tight with concentration. He hasn’t even noticed how tired he looks.
You walk closer, reaching out and laying your hand lightly on his shoulder. His hand stills mid-sentence. Slowly, he lifts his eyes.
And then everything in his face changes.
Hey,
you whisper, watching the edges of his cold exterior melt in an instant. The piercing blue of his eyes softens as they meet yours, and for the first time all evening, he leans back in his chair like he can finally breathe.
His lips curl into something rare—gentle, unguarded. You’re not Sam,
he says, voice low, and there’s something almost boyish in the way he looks at you now. Thank God.
You laugh softly, brushing a stray piece of hair from his forehead. Didn’t mean to interrupt the king at work.
He grabs your hand before you can pull it away, holding it tight. You’re the only one allowed to interrupt,
he murmurs, kissing your knuckles. I didn’t even realize how long I’ve been in here.
You glance at the clock. Four hours.
He sighs, running a hand down his face. I got lost in it again.
I know.
You step closer, resting your free hand on his cheek. That’s why I came to rescue you.
He leans into your touch, eyes on you like you’re the only thing in the world that matters. Then I surrender.
