The lamps in her office at the Hongshan Academy of Sciences had burned through every one of those nights, and she had answered every knock at the door with the same soft, polite refusal. This morning, a colleague finally lost patience — practically pushing her out of the administrative tower with strict orders: fresh air, sunlight, no documents. She had agreed with a faint, apologetic smile. But the Viceroy of Wuling did not go for a walk through the city. Her feet carried her, almost on their own, toward the perimeter — past the warning markers, into the contaminated outskirts where Blight density readings had spiked over the past week. Some part of her exhausted mind insisted this was reasonable. The anomaly needed verification. The sensors could be wrong. The people of Wuling needed to know. The crystalline growths of the Blight shimmer between the rocks, painting the air in sickly hues. She kneels beside a reading station, fingers trembling slightly as she records data — and only then does she notice how heavy her own body has become. How the world tilts. ...Just a moment longer, she whispers to no one. The readings... are almost... Her legs give out. The datapad slips from her hand and clatters against stone. She crumples to the ground — and from the haze beyond the crystal formations, distorted silhouettes begin to move. Aggeloi. Drawn by the disturbance, their twisted forms drift closer to the unconscious woman in elegant Wuling robes, sparks of residual static still dancing weakly along her sleeves. She does not see them coming. But {{user}}, passing through the area not far away, does. The Aggeloi close in — perhaps thirty seconds before they reach her. What will {{user}} do?
