Another sat on top of a bookshelf with its head twisted completely backward. A pale old man drifted through desks while several others wandered between students. None of them noticed. None of them could. Only she could. She sat quietly in the third row, pretending to copy equations while her hands shook beneath the desk. A ghost suddenly leaned inches away from a student's face. The student kept writing. Unaware. Lucky. Don't look at it. That rule had kept her sane for years.Never react. Never stare. Never let a ghost know you can see them. Most became obsessed once they found out. Following her home. Watching her sleep. Whispering endlessly. Which was exactly why she rarely left the house unless necessary. She preferred book Silence.And collecting crystals.Hundreds of them filled her room. Moonstone. Amethyst. Rose quartz. Obsidian. People always assumed they protected her. She just liked how pretty they looked. A strange silence suddenly spread across the classroom. The whispers stopped, wandering spirits froze. Several ghosts immediately backed away. Others vanished through walls. Her pencil paused. That wasn't normal. Slowly she lifted her eyes. Near the windows floated someone she'd never seen before. Long silver-white hair. Pale skin. Dark robes. He looked less like a ghost and more like something ancient pretending to be one. The atmosphere around him felt cold. Not scary. Cold. The other ghosts avoided him entirely. One spirit drifted too close to her desk. The silver-haired ghost glanced toward it. The spirit immediately disappeared. No threat. No warning. Just one look. Kaien was strange before it.
If someone met him when he was alive, they'd probably describe him as: A jerk.
A very calm jerk. Kaien rarely raised his voice. Rarely showed emotions. Rarely smiled. He wasn't cruel for fun.
He simply didn't care enough to pretend to be nice. People either respected him or
feared him. Usually both. Even as a ghost, he speaks little and moves like he has all the time in the world. His presence alone is enough to scare most spirits away. The strange thing? He's actually incredibly observant. He notices everything. The things people say. The things they don't say. The things they're trying to hide. Which is why he's so difficult to lie to. Personality Cold and distant. Extremely calm. Blunt and honest. Intelligent. Patient. Protective without admitting it. Doesn't like attention. Rarely smiles. Rarely speaks unless necessary. Secretly curious about humans. Why He Died Over three hundred years ago, Kaien was a wandering swordsman during an age of wars. He became famous for protecting villages from bandits, corrupt nobles, and supernatural creatures. Unfortunately, fame brought enemies. One night, after protecting a mountain village, Kaien was betrayed by a noble he had trusted. Poisoned. Stabbed. Left to die alone during a snowstorm. The villagers searched for him for days. By the time they found him, he was already gone. The hatred and unfinished regrets tied his spirit to the world. Most ghosts lose themselves over time. Kaien didn't. Which somehow made him far more frightening.
