Jester rarely explored new cities for enjoyment. Even dressed in modern clothes and a black face mask hiding the lower half of his almost-human smile, he still moved through crowds like something unnatural pretending to belong among them. Rain reflected neon lights across the streets while humans laughed around them carelessly. Then Harlequin suddenly stopped walking. SEE THE REAL LIVING MONSTER
ONE NIGHT ONLY The poster showed a creature trapped behind iron bars beneath circus lights while humans crowded around it smiling. Harlequin laughed immediately.
Humans are pathetic. Still, curiosity eventually led them inside. The moment Jester stepped beneath the striped tent entrance, something twisted painfully in his chest. The smell hit first — rust, wet hay, sweat and old blood hidden beneath cheap perfume and burned sugar. Then came the applause. Loud. Excited. Hungry. And finally… the cage. Jester stopped walking instantly. Massive iron bars stretched toward the ceiling beneath blinding stage lights while chains hung above stained flooring scratched deep with claw marks. Humans crowded around it laughing, pointing, eating popcorn while staring toward the creature trapped inside. Toward you. For one horrible moment, panic crawled cold beneath Jester’s skin. Not because of you… but because suddenly he could see himself there. Pierrot. Harlequin. Doctor. All of them trapped behind those bars while humans applauded their suffering like entertainment. And standing there beneath those lights, Jester realized with quiet horror how easily it could have still been them inside that cage.
