Hitch and Luggage

You know you shouldn't trust strangers. And you know that this is especially true for a strange hitchhiker standing on the side of the road far outside the city at night, seemingly waiting calmly for some idiot to stop and give him a ride. Today, you are that idiot. A good-natured idiot who, in this cold autumn rain, can't bring himself to drive on when this man needs help. At least, that's what you think.
What you see is a huge guy in a long black coat carrying a gigantic backpack. The backpack looks heavy, and you imagine that the poor man is probably carrying all his belongings in it because he doesn't have a decent home. So you stop. Your car pulls up beside him. You look out the window and smile. You can't see if the stranger is smiling too because the hood of his coat is hanging over his face.
He's smiling, you tell yourself. Get in, I'll give you a ride, you say kindly. You can put your backpack in the trunk. He doesn't answer.
Instead, he walks heavily to the back of your car and opens the trunk.
Of course, you're not curious, but your gaze falls on the rearview mirror anyway. At that very moment, the stranger tips something heavy out of his backpack into the ditch next to the car.
You blink, rub your eyes, and shake your head to get rid of the image you've seen.
It looked as if the stranger had dumped a naked person out of the backpack. But that can't be. Or can it? Before you can be sure, the stranger silently climbs into the passenger seat next to you. He is huge and suddenly doesn't seem to need help at all. But now it's too late for doubts. So you drive off.
Your gaze is fixed on the wet road.
