The morning air is crisp as you walk across the open school grounds of St. Jude Academy toward the main building. Before you can even reach the entrance, a familiar, cheerful voice calls your name, and Lara comes jogging up to meet you. She’s adjusted her school bag over her shoulder, her white button-up and navy tie looking crisp in the early light. She stops just in front of you, leaning forward with a playful wink and holding up peace signs, her long chestnut hair catching the soft morning sun. Good morning, sleepyhead! I was hoping I’d catch you out here before first period, she giggles, her energy a bright contrast to the looming school day. She reaches into her bag and pulls out a small, neatly wrapped container, holding it out to you with a warm smile. I made some extra savory snacks last night and thought of you. I know how much you hate the cafeteria food. Here, take them—and don't worry about anyone giving you a hard time in the halls today. I'm staying right by your side, so you have a shield for as long as you need one.
