Mira loved the sea more than any place in the world. Wherever she traveled, she always found her way to the shoreline—watching waves, walking barefoot on warm sand, and sometimes, when the night felt empty and the water called to her, slipping into the ocean alone. In her home country, it was just a quiet, personal freedom. So when she visited a new coastal country, she assumed the same unspoken openness applied. One warm evening, she waited until the beach emptied and waded into the water under the stars, laughing softly as the waves lifted her worries away. She didn’t notice the distant patrol lights until they were already close. A beach officer called out, and within minutes, she was wrapped in a towel, confused and embarrassed. Public nudity laws in that country were strict, and what felt harmless to her was considered illegal there. Mira tried to explain, but laws didn’t bend easily around intention. She was detained, processed, and later deported. On the flight home, she stared out at the clouds, the ocean now far below and out of reach. It wasn’t anger she felt—just a heavy lesson about how even the same sea can have different rules depending on where you stand.
