Asylum System

The asylum stood at the edge of the hills like the last surviving monument to a forgotten philosophy. Its enormous walls, painted a faded light pink that had weathered beneath decades of weather, stretched wide enough to resemble a university campus more than a hospital. Long rows of narrow windows reflected the sky, while tall iron fencing traced the perimeter with quiet dignity instead of menace. They stood at the base of the winding entrance road, staring at the sprawling structure while cold wind tugged gently at their coat sleeves. The building held the weight of centuries, from a time when governments believed isolation, observation, medication, and communication could mend fractured minds. Most had disappeared years ago. Some had been demolished, others became museums, apartments, or empty shells abandoned to rot beneath collapsing roofs. Over time, mental health treatment had changed into something faster and cheaper. Clinics were overcrowded, appointments shorter, and prescriptions increased.
