Shikatani said to Touno that he previously lived in Hokkaido. He lacked many friends growing up, sans for one boy named Shou Ueno. The two were very close, and it resulted in Shikatani developing a crush on his best friend. Their friendship, however, became strained in middle school after an incident in which Shikatani kissed Shou in the classroom, resulting in the two getting caught by other classmates. While Shou initially implied that Shikatani attacked him, he later- rather desperately- clarified to his parents that it was merely a joke.[8] Later on, a heartbroken Shikatani ultimately decided to attend Morimori Academy, a school far away from his home, and thus, far away from his family and Shou. During his first year in Morimori Academy, Shikatani begins a sexual relationship with his Chemistry teacher, Matsumura.
