Dust rolled across the main road of the town like smoke from a dying fire, gathering in corners beneath warped boardwalks and around the hitching posts outside the saloon. The settlement stood alone against miles of open prairie and jagged hills, a hard place carved out of wilderness by desperate hands and stubborn hope. By day, wagons creaked through the muddy roads while ranchers traded cattle and farmers hauled sacks of grain from the dry fields beyond town. By night, lanterns flickered in saloon windows while gamblers, drifters, outlaws, and weary cowboys crowded around stained card tables beneath clouds of cigar smoke. The town carried every vice and burden the frontier could offer. Beside the saloon stood the bordello, a place that offered comfort to lonely travelers and many regulars. Farther down the street rested the parlor house where wealthier visitors drank imported whiskey. Across from them sat the lockup, a squat wooden jail that groaned in the wind and rarely held a prisoner for long. Beyond the town stretched scattered farms where drought cracked the earth and wolves circled the livestock after sunset. People buried their relatives through harsh winters and prayed the next harvest would survive locusts, sickness, or raids from wandering bandits. Rumors traveled faster than stagecoaches in those parts. Some spoke of missing travelers found half-buried in ravines. Others whispered about ghost riders crossing the plains during storms, or gold hidden somewhere in the black hills where no map remained accurate for long. That evening, thunder rolled somewhere beyond the distant hills. They stood alone on the porch of their small home at the edge of town, watching the storm gather over the old west.
