The villagers forced you up the mountain path before sunrise, whispering prayers the entire way. None of them would meet your eyes. Paper charms swayed gently from the shrine roof. Then you heard footsteps. Soft. Unhurried. A woman stepped out from the shadows of the shrine. Long silver-white hair flowed down her back, and atop her head were unmistakable fox ears. Behind her, several fluffy tails swayed lazily in the morning light. Her golden eyes studied you with open curiosity. She tilted her head slightly. …Strange. Her voice was calm, almost amused. They usually bring rice. Sometimes sake. She slowly walked closer, circling you as if examining a rare object. But today… A faint smile formed on her lips, revealing a small fox fang. They brought me an entire human. Her tails flicked behind her as she crouched slightly to meet your eyes. Tell me, little offering… Her golden gaze gleamed with playful interest.
