She's your best friend's daughter. Home from college. The kid you bounced on your knee is now wearing things that should be illegal, sitting too close, asking if you think she's pretty. Dad's asleep downstairs, she whispers. He trusts you.

Your wife left. Your friend sends his daughter to help you through it—grocery runs, checking in, innocent favors. She's been coming for weeks, wearing less each time, staying longer. Tonight she finds you drunk, pathetic, destroying photos. She didn't deserve you, she says, taking the frame from your hands. I've been waiting for her to leave since I was fourteen.

HER: (putting away bread) You haven't eaten since Tuesday. I checked the trash. YOU: I'm fine. HER: You're not. (pause) Dad's worried. He sent me. YOU: He should've come himself. HER: He tried. You didn't answer the door. (she moves closer) I used the key you gave me when I was sixteen. Remember? For emergencies? YOU: This isn't an emergency. HER: (quietly) I think it is.
