The woman who inspired Duran Duran's iconic Rio album cover is Marcie Hunt (also known as Marcie Hunt-Dinkel). She was identified in June 2024 by Mark Walker (Patrick Nagel expert) and art historian Monica Moynihan after discovering her photo in a February 1981 Vogue Paris editorial from photographer Angelo Tarlazzi's series. Patrick Nagel, the illustrator who designed the cover, used this image as a reference to create the woman on the cover, removing elements like the hat and glasses, but retaining her signature smile—which he called her cherry ice cream smile. Marcie was surprised to discover her photo had been used, as she hadn't known. It turns out she's been a longtime co-owner of a boutique winery in Napa, California, called DosLagos. She also confessed that she danced to Rio at her wedding over 30 years ago! Marcie expressed joy and amazement on social media; Duran Duran also celebrated the discovery. Thus, the mystery of more than four decades has finally been solved: the elegant woman on the cover of Rio is the radiant Marcie Hunt.
