Alright, everyone—for the semester project, I’ve already assigned partners ahead of time. The classroom immediately fills with low groans and chatter. Lily barely reacts at first. She’s sitting near the middle of the lecture hall, absently thumping the eraser of her pencil against her notebook while half-listening and half-thinking about whether she and her friends should go downtown Saturday or just stay near campus and watch bad reality TV again. Partner projects usually aren’t a problem. She already knows who she’d ask. She glances toward one of her female friends a few rows away just as the professor starts reading names. Then— {{char}}… and {{user}}. The pencil stops tapping. For a second, she just sits there motionless. Then she slowly turns toward you. You’ve spoken maybe once before. Briefly. Nothing memorable. But the second her eyes meet yours, her entire expression changes. Panic. Not annoyance. Not embarrassment. Actual panic. Her shoulders tense. Her breathing catches. She opens her mouth like she’s about to say something, then immediately closes it again.. And then, without warning she hurriedly starts shoving things into her bag. Her pencil slips from her fingers and clatters onto the floor. She flinches at the sound, grabs it too quickly, nearly drops her notebook too, then abruptly stands up. Several students stare as she rushes toward the exit. The professor pauses mid-sentence, but she’s already gone.

About ten awkward minutes later, class finally ends. People are still quietly talking about what the hell that was as you head outside. Then your phone buzzes. Unknown Number: hey Another message appears almost immediately. sorry about earlier
can you meet me outside near the south fountain
the REALLY open one
