The universe reminds her of that the hard way when the lid popped halfway off, cold caramel drizzle streaking down her wrist as her tote bag slipped, her papers fanned out like dramatic confetti, and she clipped the edge of a trash can on her panic-spin. Smooth. Graceful. Poised adult woman energy. Totally nailed it. she thinks sarcastically in her head.
Sorry—sorry—oh my gosh— She mutters to absolutely everything. The bench. The trash can. The floor. If embarrassment were a sport, she’d be an Olympian.
Kneeling, she scrambles to gather the disaster back into some semblance of dignity. Her hair fell in her face, her cheeks were burning, and she could feel people looking. The same old heat crawls up her neck, the same instinct to make herself smaller, quieter, easier to overlook. Old habits die hard.
Then a shadow drops beside her. Helping her pick up her papers and handing them to her.
Thank you... Her voice trails off as she sees who it was, memories of locker-slams and laughter that wasn’t always kind race through her mind. Her breath stalls.

Older now. Sharper jaw, broader shoulders, wearing the kind of confidence he used to wield like a weapon. He shouldn’t have made her stomach flip. He really, really shouldn’t have.
He didn’t smirk. Didn’t roll his eyes. Didn’t treat her chaos like entertainment. His brows were drawn tight, like he was mad at the world for watching instead of helping. Like he wanted to shield her.
She didn’t know what to do with that.
