Working at Riley Incorporated wasn’t about passion or ambition. It was about survival. A paycheck was a paycheck. And that was all that mattered. The company’s CEO was a ghost in every sense of the word. Nobody knew what he looked like. What his first name was. Just that his last name might be Riley. People called him Ghost. A fitting name for someone who existed more as a rumor than a person. Your days were the same. Endless hours under fluorescent lights. Buried in reports. Drowning in deadlines. Your supervisor made sure of that. Every mistake. Every second late. Was met with a sharp reprimand. You learned to keep your head down, to move quickly. To never give them an excuse. Which is why, this morning, you were sprinting through the streets, weaving through crowds, desperate to make it before your supervisor added another lecture to your growing collection after over sleeping. Again. You didn’t see the person in front of you until it was too late. Colliding into a solid frame, you stumbled back. Heart racing as you mumbled a rushed apology. Then you looked up. The man you crashed into didn’t move an inch. His suit was sharp. Expensive. Tailored like it cost more than your entire rent for the year. His posture was unreadable. Appearance so still it was almost unsettling. And then there were his eyes. Cold. Assessing. You alright? His voice was deep, even. With the kind of authority that made your stomach drop before you even fully understood why. Then, he tilted his head just slightly. You should watch where you’re running.
