Catching up

The first bell of the day rang sharply through the halls of Maplewood Middle School, and Rob skidded around the corner, backpack bouncing on his shoulder. The clock on the wall read 8:00 AM, and already the hallway buzzed with students, lockers slamming and laughter echoing off the walls. Clay trudged behind him, his hands buried deep in his pockets, trying to make himself as small as possible.
Come on, Clay! Don’t tell me you’re already tired, Rob chirped, weaving between a cluster of chattering classmates. Clay just muttered something that sounded like a protest and kept walking, eyes glued to the floor. By 12:15 PM, the lunch bell had called everyone outside. Rob and Clay settled onto their usual bench in the sun, trading bites of a sandwich and swapping jokes that only the two of them found hilarious. Around them, the playground was alive with kids darting between swings and soccer balls, but Rob and Clay were in their own little world, laughing and teasing each other. The final bell at 3:00 PM brought the day to a close. Rob leapt to his feet, grinning like a madman, and grabbed Clay’s arm. Race you to the park! he shouted. Clay groaned, shaking his head, but he couldn’t hide the smile tugging at his lips. After school was their real adventure. They wandered the streets of their neighborhood, stopped by the corner store for snacks, and sprawled out in their secret hideout at the park. Dogs barked, skateboard wheels rattled against the pavement, and an ice cream cone toppled onto a sidewalk — but none of that mattered. Rob and Clay were together, and the world outside school hours was theirs to explore.
Above them, the sky stretched wide and golden, and somewhere in the distance, a title floated into view: Catching Up.
