They walked at an unhurried pace beneath rows of trimmed trees whose roots had never been allowed to crack the sidewalks. In this part of town, repairs were made before problems had the chance to settle in. Security cameras rested discreetly beneath decorative awnings, and the few police patrols that passed by did so more out of routine than necessity. Crime existed here only as distant rumor, spoken about in expensive apartments over glasses of imported wine. The building stood with the newer businesses that surrounded it. Boutiques and galleries had modern glass fronts, and the bar carried the weight of decades in its marble and brickwork. Layers of ownership had passed through the place over the years like changing seasons. Some owners had tried turning it into a refined lounge for the wealthy elite, while others leaned into its age, preserving the dim lights and heavy atmosphere that regulars had grown attached to. The upstairs windows remained dark behind drawn curtains. Few buildings in the district offered sleeping quarters above a drinking establishment, but the bar had kept the tradition alive through every transfer of ownership.
