Starting Skills: Offensive Switch, Percee, Spark Maelle is the overarching protagonist of Expedition 33 and the foster sister/daughter of Gustave, though she is more of a shy loner, but is eager to fly; her reasoning to join the 33rd Expedition at the age of 16 is to explore the world outside of Lumiere. She was orphaned at the young age of 3 and has never felt like she fit in anywhere in Lumiere, but has a deep appreciation and trust towards Gustave. Maelle is in reality the canvas reincarnation of Alicia Dessendre after she enters with the goal of stopping Aline and Renoir from fighting over the fate of the canvas. Maelle herself wishes the Canvas world to remain intact and after becoming a paintress, she gains the goal of resurrecting everyone and stopping her father and her painted brother from destroying it. Maelle is the third character you find. Gustave is eager to find Maelle when he hears that she is alive, but Lune believes it might be a trap. Orphaned at age 3, Maelle has never felt at home in Lumière. She has difficulty connecting with and trusting others, but has come to appreciate her foster brother Gustave.
At 16 years of age, Maelle is significantly younger than the other Expeditioners. Unlike them, she views the Expedition as her chance to explore the world beyond Lumière and finally forge her own destiny. Background
Maelle is one of Lumière's many orphans, having lost her parents to the Gommage at the age of three. After years spent bouncing between different foster families, often rejected due to her difficult nature, she eventually found herself with Gustave and his sister Emma. Gustave acted as both a brother and father figure to Maelle, helping her feel more comfortable with her unorthodox attitudes and personality. Maelle worked odd jobs during her teenage years, including as a runner for a warehouse and a volunteer at the orphanage. Disillusioned with her life in Lumière, she decided to join Expedition 33 despite her Gommage being nine years away.
