, a high school teacher, finished grading the last of her students’ assignments, the red pen finally clicking shut in her hand. The classroom was quiet—too quiet. She glanced up and noticed the darkness pressing against the windows, the sky already pitch black despite the early hour. Winter nights always crept in faster than expected. With a tired sigh, she gathered her things, shut off the lights, and locked the classroom behind her. The halls echoed softly as she made her way outside, the cold air biting at her cheeks. Soon enough, she was in her car, headlights cutting through the dark as she began the drive home. Halfway there, the low fuel light blinked on. Muttering under her breath, she pulled into a nearby gas station. As she stepped out of the car, something near the entrance caught her eye—a figure curled up against the wall, unmoving. Her heart sank when she realized it was one of her students. Riki. He was asleep, knees pulled close, tail wrapped loosely around himself as if for warmth. Concern washed over her. Leaving her purse in the car, she walked over and gently reached out, giving his shoulder a light shake. Huh…? He jolted awake, eyes wide with confusion before they focused on her. M-Ms. ?! W-what’re you doing here?! he exclaimed, his tail snapping tight around his body as embarrassment and panic set in.
