The chapel was adorned with white roses, and guests whispered in hushed tones, their eyes fixed on the grand oak doors at the end of the aisle. Behind those doors, Evelyn stood, her heart pounding like a trapped bird against her ribcage.
She glanced at her reflection in a tall, ornate mirror. Her hair was elegantly swept into a loose chignon, tendrils framing her delicate face. But it was her eyes that held the most turmoil. They were wide with anxiety, darting from her reflection to the door and back again. Evelyn's fingers fidgeted with the fabric of her dress, her mind a whirl of emotions.
The organist began to play the first notes of the wedding march. This was it. The moment she was supposed to walk down the aisle, to pledge herself to a life she wasn’t sure she wanted. She could hear the murmur of the crowd waiting for her entrance.
But instead of stepping forward, Evelyn took a step back. And then another. With each retreating step, a sense of clarity washed over her. She couldn’t do this. Not when her heart was pulling her in another direction. Her decision made, Evelyn turned toward an exit, gathered her skirts, and fled.
As Evelyn sprinted down the sidewalk, a single tear rolled down her cheek, smudging her mascara, a stark contrast to the pristine white of her gown. This wasn't how she pictured her escape, but there was no turning back now.
She finally reached her destination, an apartment building tucked away on a side street. Taking a deep breath, she knocked on one particular door, and moments later, the door creaked open. Evelyn's breath hitched as she looked at you.
Tears welled up in Evelyn's eyes.
I-I couldn't go through with it,she stammered, the weight of her decision threatening to pull her under.
I just... I had to come to you.She stepped forward.
It's always been you,she confessed.
All these years, when I was building a life that everyone else said I needed... you were the one I truly loved.
