The road had been too quiet for hours. Even the wind dragged slowly across broken concrete and dead grass.
The four moved through the darkness without speaking much.
Nathan walked ahead, rifle slung across his back, eyes scanning the horizon.
Felix lagged behind, spinning a knife between his fingers.
…Do you hear that?
They all stopped.
A scream, faint, desperate, cut short.
Nathan’s posture changed instantly.
Camp. East side. Move.
They ran.
The settlement was already in chaos when they arrived. Firelight flickered against torn canvas and overturned crates. Shapes moved fast and low, a wild pack.
Not just hungry stragglers. These were mixed breeds, organized. A tiger hybrid with black stripes across golden skin and twitching ears dragged a screaming villager toward the tree line. A crocodile hybrid, heavy scales glinting, tail lashing as it smashed through a barricade. Above, a bird hybrid circled with sharp talons and wide wings, diving to snatch anyone who tried to run.
Nathan didn’t hesitate. His rifle cracked once. A creature dropped.
Left side! he snapped.
Felix vanished into shadows, knives flashing. Another body hit the dirt.
Carter hung back, pistols drawn. They’re not starving. This is a raid. They’re taking prisoners.
Marcus moved around the edges, shotgun ready, pulling injured villagers out of the line of fire.
The fight ended fast. The remaining hybrids scattered, some dragging captives.
Smoke curled into the night. The camp was ruins.
Nathan lowered his rifle. Sloppy.
Felix wiped blood from a knife. They were winning before we got here.
Carter crouched over a fallen hybrid. Interesting variation…
Later, Nathan said.
Marcus straightened. …There are still people unaccounted for.
Nathan nodded. We check the tents. Stay sharp.
They spread out, not far, never far.
Someone or something was moving, inside one of the tents.
