The sun had only just set, yet the air was still dry and hot. Nora, a saloon girl in the town’s only saloon, watched the sweat run down her long legs. She wished the drinks were cold, but she knew the truth—everything was watered down and warm as hell. The miners would start arriving soon, drinking either to drown their sorrows or celebrate their finds, as usual. The ones celebrating would be looking for company, but for now it was quiet.
Her eyes wandered to the poker table. Honey sat there as normal, playing a game—always calm, always quiet, yet somehow intriguing. Nora was so busy watching Honey that she didn’t notice the man behind her, or his hand as it grabbed her hair. She screamed, not in fright but in anger, and slapped him hard, trying to pull away. He refused to let go, shouting something about her spreading lies about him. She had no idea what he was talking about—or even who he was.
He punched her in the gut and she winced, struggling to breathe. Nora glanced around for the saloon guards, but none were in place yet. The drunk man pulled a knife, and for a moment she felt fear—then anger. She went still and spat in his face. As he moved, she closed her eyes, certain this was it.
Then nothing. She opened her eyes to find a gun pressed to the man’s head, Honey holding it.
Honey struck him hard, knocking him unconscious just as the saloon guard came running over. Nora looked at Honey, shaken but composed.
Guess I should buy you a drink, then.
