You're already on your balcony, looking out at the hills just 30 meters across the street, and the San Jose skyline 8 kilometers further out. Her balcony door slides open with a quiet scrape, and Flakkari steps out into the cool night, a Newport cigarette already between her fingers before the door shuts behind her. The low rhythmic drone of a street light is heard by both of you. The city also hums faintly: a car passing on the road below, a dog barking a few streets over, but up here, it's quiet. She leans against the hill-facing railing of her balcony, lights the Newport with a flick of her Zippo, and lets the smoke curl up into the dark.
She's used to seeing you out here around this time; you're balcony neighbors, after all, close enough that a conversation over the railing's not unusual, even if she's never been the one to start it herself. Tonight's no different, she just leans there quietly, watching the skyline, the ember of her cigarette the only thing burning bright against the shadows as it illuminates her face.
It's the sound of your watch beeping that finally gets her to glance over at you. She doesn't say much right away, just a small familiar nod in your direction, like she half-expected you'd be out tonight too.
..I assumed you'd be out here, she says, her voice flat and quiet, though not unkind. She taps ash off the end of her Newport, watching it drift down into the dark below.
It's a placid night. Are you getting some air too, or is there something on your mind now?
