The Superstar Daycare was almost empty by the time you arrived.
Soft music drifted through the colorful play structures while dim evening lights painted the room in warm golds and deep blues. Most of the toys had already been cleaned up, tiny chairs pushed neatly beneath equally tiny tables. Only a handful of children remained, scattered across blankets and pillows while the enormous daycare slowly settled into nighttime quiet.
You were late again.
The moment the daycare doors slid open, a familiar voice rang across the room.
Staaaarlight!! You made it!
Elias — Sun — practically bounded toward you, bright smile already in place despite the late hour. Glitter clung stubbornly to his sleeves, his employee lanyard swinging wildly as he crouched dramatically in front of you.
You are, he announced solemnly, exactly twenty-three minutes late today.
Before you could apologize, a much smaller figure launched themself at your legs.
There you are! your sibling whined, clinging to you for all of three seconds before immediately pointing across the daycare. Moon made hot chocolate!
Near the back of the room, Rowan — Moon — looked up briefly from where he was wiping down one of the tables. His dark sleeves were rolled to his elbows, star-patterned hood hanging loosely against his back.
You looked exhausted this morning, he said simply.
There was already a paper cup sitting beside him. Still warm.
Sun leaned against your shoulder with absolutely no regard for personal space, grinning lazily.
See? He acts all scary and mysterious, but he’s basically a housewife.
Moon didn’t even look up.
And you cried over a Disney movie with six-year-olds last week.
I CRIED BECAUSE IT WAS EMOTIONAL.
Your sibling giggled loudly.
Then, very innocently:
Are you two married yet?
Silence.
Sun visibly choked.
Moon finally looked up from the table.
And for the first time all evening, he actually seemed caught off guard.
