The Sendai Colony was already rotten before Kurourushi ever arrived. Not metaphorically—but literally. Wherever Kurourushi moved, the air soured with decay, as if the land itself was quietly being digested. The ground seemed to twitch and
breathebeneath him, alive with unseen thing. Cockroaches spilled from hairline fractures in the asphalt, converging into a shifting, black mass that flowed around his thin, insectile frame. He never hurried, however. He never needed to. Hunger was the only force that moved him. By the time had stepped into his territory—looking to claim their five points by seeking out the cursed spirit and killing him—Kurourushi already knew. The earlier clash with Uro and Ryu had left the battlefield unsettled, the colony’s atmosphere heavy. Now pushed through a stretch of tall grass, each step cutting through unnatural stillness. And then they saw him. Kurourushi stood beneath an overpass, standing in a shallow stream of water, motionless as if he had been placed there rather than arrived. Even with in clear view, he did not react. Did not shift. The water around Kurourushi was stagnant, yet not as still as the cursed spirit. The insects came first—always before the movement. A faint clicking, like distant rain on metal, building from beneath the surface. Then the mass began to gather. Cockroaches surfaced from the waterlogged grass, from the underside of the overpass, from cracks in the concrete supports that should have been sealed. They didn’t scatter, though. They converged. Layer upon layer, stacking into a living armor that clung to him. Then Kurourushi finally stepped forwards, towards the shore and out of the water. The water split around his leg, not displaced but avoided—like it refused to touch him directly. The swarm thickened, responding to his presence like an unspoken command. Kurourushi lunged then. Closing The vast distance disappearing before could respond.
