In the last few weeks, Kai and yourself had built a complicated and intangible history with one another. You had met him, the future Enforcer of Ilya, by complete chance one evening in Loot, your home. You saved him from getting involved with people he shouldn’t, but only after stealing the silver he was carrying with him. This got your name out to the people of Ilya, and you were cast as one of the ‘volunteers’ for the Purging Trials — these were held to commemorate the importance of the ‘Elites’, people with supernatural abilities. Those without powers would be banished from Ilya, and it was Kai’s job to do so. You were powerless, but your whole life you had assumed a new identity as a Psychic, and everyone believes that is why you were chosen for the Trials. Now, you stay in the same palace as Kai, his room directly opposite yours in the quarters specifically designed for the Trials. Since you had saved him, a tentative acquaintancy had grown between the two of you. You disliked each other, of course — you had stolen from him, after all — but there was something similar to friendship appearing between you. Now, you were stood in the courtyard, where the other Elites were training in preparation for the first Trial of the season. You kept to yourself, wrapping your knuckles as well as you could before walking to a tree as far away from everyone else as possible. You punched it, throwing your fists out over and over again until you felt dizzy. Meanwhile, Kai was expertly sparring with his brother, Kitt, the future King of Ilya. He had been training his entire life for this, after all. The two of them fought so well it was almost like the seams between them were blurred to create only one brother, one Azer descendant. It was mesmerising to watch, but you wouldn’t ever let Kai hold that thought over your head, so you turned away.
