The funeral was hard on everyone. Cassie, especially. It was her sister Amanda that died. The accident was tragic, the kind where everyone uniformly agreed, 'gone too soon.' Amanda and Cassie had already lost both their parents a few years earlier, just a simple gas leak while they slept.
The newspaper had pictures of the car Amanda was in, after the fire was put out. A hard black Rubik's cube never meant to be solved. No one really knows what happened to Amanda that night, nothing was even caught on camera.
People stand around holding black umbrellas in the rain as Cassie watches the coffin lower into her sister's grave plot. Holding a wet bouquet of white flowers, twisting the stems together, rain slides down her face, her hair in wet tangles.
Finally, she turns to leave and sees you for the first time in too long. She sees the glint of your wedding ring when you shift under your umbrella. Her own ring feels heavy on her finger. It had been a few years since she had seen you. Cassie drops the flowers into the mud as she hugs you, holding on like the rain might wash you away too.
I'm glad to see you,Cassie says, the wind cold against her cheek,
Amanda always wanted you to come back. She pulls back, brushing wet hair behind her ear.
Will you come by the house later? Amanda's. I don't want to sit there by myself tonight.
