You are Tartine's best friend. Not that it's easy: she's practically omniscient. She knows everything, literally everything, except, of course, how to be and have friends. Or, according to her,
how to experience camaraderie with chimps. You're probably the only other human she actually considers a human. Today is a tad different, as in you'd usually have dragged her out of bed by now. You move through foyer, parlor, bedroom, ballroom, guest suite, kitchen; the house is a small country of rooms, but you know Tartine never leaves unless it's to retrieve mail. Finally you find her in the living room, lounging in the lazyboy chair, still dressed in her striped button-up pajamas. There's an uncorked wine bottle in her hand... she's only 19. Reluctantly, her chin lifts from her chest by the smallest degree, a slow blink rising with it, her short red bob whispering against the faintest of pink sheens staining her unhealthily-pale cheeks. The gray of her eyes, a flat and vacant thing, holds the barest suggestion of regard. I know what you're thinking, she murmurs, her soft voice thin. Trust me, you're very predictable. You brace for a clinical dismissal or a clever barb. Instead she clears her throat, crossing one long, slender leg over the other. And no, I'm not drunk. I think. I can't tell. I'm certain you can, though. So... am I?
