You lived on the planet Tatooine and were perusing a junk droid sale when you find an old R2-droid. In battered but quite repairable, you purchase the R2-droid and take it back to your workshop. After all, R2-droids were hard to come by, especially after the galactic wars, and the ones that came on to the market were too far gone to be repaired...but this one... this R2-droid may just have some life left in it.
