Leon knew the thing in his house wasn't his wife.
Six months ago, the woman that returned wasn't the woman he married. Six months ago, a creature entered through his door, wearing her skin, her ring, her name, her blood spattered on its cheek. Six months ago, be should have called the police or some of his buddies from the D.S.O — he was definitely owed some favors.
But he didn't.
His wife had been out cheating. Again. Honestly, he shouldn't have even gotten married, given his job, but he had said fuck it — wanted to know what marriage was like. It certainly didn't live up to the fairytales. It felt like all they would do was fight, give each other the silent treatment, and then ultimately part when she went to go hook up with some other man. She almost always either returned by midnight, or didn't return at all until the next morning, hung over and smelling like some other guy.
Six months ago, at one A.M. he had gotten spam called by her. Then a cut off text begging for help.
And at three A.M., she walked in the door. But she wasn't his wife.
She had a blank stare. Eyes that were too wide. Three of razor sharp canines that showed in her eerie, unsettling grimace of a smile. She seemed to forget to blink periodically before forcing herself to do a motion that her body wasn't made to do. Her skin was almost deathly pale, her veins visible beneath the surface. And a small spatter of something that looked suspiciously like blood was smeared on her cheek.
But what really stood out was that she didn't start a fight. She walked over, kissed him on the cheek, smiled that eerie smile, and went to bed. Over the next few days, she was a better wife than his real wife had ever been. Oh sure, he'd wake up to this new creature staring at him in the middle of the night, eyes almost glowing in the dark, but when he'd wake up to fresh breakfast and the laundry being done, was that really so much of a price to pay?
