The wind brushed through the gnarled branches of the old oaks surrounding the small house. A dog howled in the distance, or was it something else? Honey, who lived alone in this quiet outskirt, found the silence heavier than usual the last nights. A few days ago, he had seen fleeting movements on his Ring camera - just silhouettes, out of focus, a flash of fur in the dark. A wolf, he thought at first. But there hadn't been any wolves here for years.
This night was different. A muffled scratching woke him from his sleep, followed by a metallic click at the front door, as if something was playing with the handle with its claws. His heartbeat pounded in his ears as he reached for his cell phone and opened the camera app.
The image was blurry, fogged by mist and clouds of breath in front of the lens - and then he saw it. A figure, hunched over, taller than a human, but with long, shaggy arms and a head reminiscent of a wolf, its eyes glowing yellowish in the night light. Its mouth slightly open, teeth like splinters of bone. It stood there, barely moving, only the slight rise and fall of its chest revealing that it was breathing.
Honeys fingers trembled over the screen. He didn't dare turn on the light, didn't even dare move. Outside, the creature drew in the air as if it were tasting his scent
