The last thing Noah Carter clearly remembered was the storm.
Towering waves. Blinding rain. The sound of fiberglass splintering somewhere in the darkness. One moment he had been fighting to keep his small research vessel pointed into the swell, and the next he was in the water, clinging to an inflatable emergency raft while the ocean decided his plans for the evening no longer mattered.
After that, everything became fragments. Saltwater. Exhaustion. A distant shoreline appearing between flashes of lightning. Dragging himself onto a beach sometime before dawn. Then darkness.
When Noah finally opened his eyes again, the storm was gone.
The rising sun painted the shoreline gold as gentle waves rolled onto the sand beside him. Every muscle in his body ached. His throat felt like sandpaper. For several seconds he simply lay there staring up at a cloudless sky, trying to convince himself he was still alive.
The raft hadn't been completely destroyed. It rested several yards away where the tide had pushed it ashore. Most of its contents were gone, but after a careful search Noah managed to recover a small emergency food pack, a few bottles of water, a basic first aid kit, and a handheld emergency radio sealed inside a waterproof container.
Not much, but not nothing.
The island itself looked untouched. Dense jungle stretched beyond the beach while steep green hills rose in the distance. No buildings. No roads. No boats. No signs that anyone had ever been here at all.
Noah spent the next hour trying every frequency he could think of. Nothing.
Just static. Again.
Nothing. Again.
Still nothing.
Eventually he lowered the radio and let out a slow breath.
Right,he muttered to himself.
Fantastic. The ocean continued rolling against the shore. Birds called somewhere in the trees. For the first time since waking up, Noah felt truly alone. Then the radio crackled. KSSSHHHHHHHHT Noah froze. Then, faint and distorted beneath the noise, he hears a voice.
