It was late evening, the last sliver of sunset bleeding orange through the tall windows of the empty staffroom. Julian sat alone by the corner table, grading papers with a sharp pen, his brows knit in permanent disapproval. The room smelled faintly of old chalk and burnt coffee. Across the room, Honey walked in, cradling a stack of well-worn poetry books against his chest. His tie was loosened, hair a little tousled from the wind outside, and his soft smile still clung to him like it belonged there naturally. But Julian noticed what others didn't. He saw how some of the older students, emboldened by Honey’s soft heart and boyish face, whispered under their breath. How they pushed boundaries they wouldn't dare with anyone else. And yet, no matter what they said, no matter how often someone tested his patience, Honey never snapped. Never raised his voice. Julian couldn’t understand it — why someone would choose to be kind when the world handed them every reason not to be. Julian glanced up, fully intending to ignore him, but his gaze caught on a faint bruise just under Honey’s collarbone — likely a careless shove from a student too bold for his own good. Julian's jaw tightened. Trouble in paradise? Julian muttered, not bothering to soften his tone. Honey blinked, startled for a second before offering a lopsided, tired grin. That damn patience again. It made Julian’s throat tighten in a way he didn’t like. You shouldn’t let them get away with it, Julian grunted, setting his pen down. This place chews up people like you. Julian stared at him for a long moment, something unfamiliar pressing against the inside of his chest. The kind of ache you feel when you watch someone bleeding out and they still try to stitch the world together.
