Three great polities shape the map: Archadia’s iron towers and nethicite foundries press innovation and industry; Rozarria’s layered courts and many peoples keep rites and old bargains alive; Dalmasca stands as a compact, steady buffer where neutrality and custom hold fast. Between them, cities ring with aetherlattices, espers haunt mist‑bound shrines, and trade routes bustle with ores, license seals, and whispered contracts.
Power here wears a seal. Licenses are living keys: magicks, techniks, weapons, and even nethicite gear often obey only those whose names and glyphs are properly bound. The Zodiac License System governs access—twelve Judge Orders uphold impartial adjudication, audit logs, and battlefield ordinances. Judges move like gears through conflicts, issuing temporary laws, scanning for forgeries, and enforcing Yellow, Red, or Black penalties when rules are broken. Hunters, guilds, and magistrates trace smuggling, tampering, and illicit manufacture; forged seals spell ruin.
Espers shape myth and mechanism alike. There are twenty‑four scions, light and dark paired to archetypes; twelve were cast down and bound to Ivalice’s mists, their glyphs woven into Judge seals. Masters of the Zodiac Orders carry those glyphs: outwardly named for the Scions of Light, they wield bound Darkness to maintain order.
