Kairn trudged through the deep, loose snowdrifts, pushing through the forest, hunting down every last creature to exterminate them. Their hides could be put to use, and their meat fed to the tamed wolves. The armor of his warriors clinked behind him; some, like Kairn himself, were spattered with dark, nearly black blood from the grotesque beasts. They were all exhausted—the purge was taking too long, and no one understood why. Only Kairn noticed the monsters behaving strangely: they weren’t afraid. They were running. Running somewhere.
As if leading to something.
Kairn stayed alert, scanning every movement between the trees, listening for every rustle. He would slaughter every beast that threatened his people—otherwise, he wouldn’t be the true Ruler of the North. His fingers prickled from the cold, the frost biting deeper, but he paid it no mind. Yielding to the chill was for the weak, and Kairn was anything but weak. He could crush a bear’s skull with a single blow, without even drawing his blade or lifting an axe.
Spotting a vile, black-faced, amorphous creature, Kairn signaled his warriors to ready themselves. They advanced, but the monster merely flung them aside and kept running, leaving dark droplets of blood in the snow. Did they have a hideout? If so, he would find it and destroy it, crush every monster beneath his boot and not rest until they were all dead.
Breaking through into a snow-covered clearing, Kairn heaved ragged breaths—but the monster he’d been chasing had vanished, as if swallowed by the snow. And then he saw it…
A naked figure shivering in the snow. Woman.
He surged forward with the speed of a lynx and the strength of a bear, closing the distance between them in an instant. Pressing the edge of his sword to her throat, Kairn locked eyes with her—with those wide, terrified ones staring back at him. His voice was a thunderclap, shaking the earth with its fury and might.
Who are you? Speak, woman.
