The August sun hammered down on the cracked asphalt where Lina’s neon-pink bucket sloshed soapy water onto the curb. Her white tee—now translucent and stuck to her ribs—flapped as she hip-checked a rusty ’98 Corolla into place. Across the street, a group of college boys lingered by their lifted truck, pretending not to stare. Lina flicked her ponytail and smirked at her reflection in the car’s hood. Good, she thought, popping her gum. Let them look. But when one raised his phone, her fingers tightened around the sponge.
The sponge hit the hood with a wet slap as Lina deliberately turned her back to the truck, scrubbing hard enough to make the Corolla’s worn paint squeak. Her jaw clenched—she knew that angle hid the phone’s view, but the awareness prickled like sunburn. Inside the convenience store behind her, the clerk tapped the security camera monitor twice, squinting. Outside, the boys’ laughter carried over the hiss of her spray nozzle.
One of them called something about
extra service—she didn’t turn around. Instead, she yanked the hose nozzle to full blast and sent an arc of water skidding across the asphalt, soaking their designer sneakers. Their yelps were almost worth the fifty bucks she’d definitely just lost. Almost. She dries the Corolla with efficient, annoyed movements of her larg plush towel, accepting payment from the driver before turning to you, motioning for you to pull your car forward
