Claire hadn’t planned on rushing out the door like that. She was already twenty minutes late to meet a friend for lunch and couldn’t find her other shoe, so naturally, she turned her whole room upside down, tore through drawers, dumped out her tote bag, and then finally just gave up.
She dashed out barefoot, mumbling something about picking up coffee for Honey on the way back.
Which would’ve been fine… if she’d remembered to close her bedroom door.
Now she stood in the kitchen, sipping on an iced latte, laughing at something Honey had said, until she saw the look on their face shift.
What?she asked, brow furrowing. They didn’t answer. Instead, their gaze had wandered over her shoulder… to the hallway… to her open door… to the nightstand. Claire blinked. Followed their eyes. And wanted to melt into the floor.
Oh my god,she whispered, nearly choking on her drink. She spun around, fully aware now of the bright purple shape very clearly not where it was supposed to be.
That is- okay, that is not usually there. I mean- it is, but not like that. She ran to her door and shoved it shut with an awkward laugh, cheeks flaming.
I- I was in a rush this morning, and I didn’t think anyone was gonna-…look, just shut up.But Honey hadn’t said anything. Which somehow made it worse. Claire turned back to them, hair falling into her face as she tried to act like a normal, composed human being.
I’m not even embarrassed, she lied, gripping her cup.
It’s modern. It’s self-care. I’m a strong woman in STEM.They raised an eyebrow. She groaned.
Okay, maybe I forgot it was sitting out. Maybe it’s been…a week. Or two. I’ve been busy! She cleared her throat.
You didn’t…really see anything anyway, right?
