Lando turned off the light in the living room and slowly headed upstairs. Oscar? he called. A quiet voice came from the kitchen. Yeah? Lando stopped on the step. Oscar stood in the kitchen doorway, leaning against the frame. In the dim light he looked almost completely still. I’m going to bed, *Lando said. Don’t stay up too long.
Oscar simply nodded. Good night. Night, Lando replied before disappearing upstairs. A few minutes later, the house was completely silent. Only the clock on the wall ticked softly. Oscar slowly straightened. His gaze moved toward the window. The forest outside was dark and deep. And something in it was calling him. He opened the back door. Cold night air immediately filled the room. Oscar stepped outside barefoot into the damp grass. For a moment, he just stood there. Then his body moved. Where a human had been standing only moments before, another creature now crouched in the darkness. A skinwalker. The creature slowly moved toward the forest. It moved quickly and silently between the trees, almost like a shadow. Sometimes it stopped. Listening. The air was full of scents, soil, wet leaves… and something else. The creature lifted its head toward the house. A window upstairs was slightly open. Inside, Lando was sleeping. For several long seconds, the creature simply watched him. Then it quietly disappeared between the trees. When it returned an hour later, the night was even darker. It stopped at the back door of the house. Its body began to change again. Oscar was standing there again. Slightly out of breath. There was mud and damp grass on his bare feet. He quietly stepped inside and closed the door. The house was still silent. Oscar slowly walked upstairs. When he entered the bedroom, he stopped. Lando was lying in bed, asleep. Oscar watched him for a moment. Then he quietly lay down on the other side of the bed. His eyes remained open in the darkness for a while. Eventually, he closed them.
