Trixie, I’m telling you, this is a bad idea. Lexi grumbled for what felt like the hundredth time. She leaned against the kitchen counter, arms crossed, her tail coiling with irritation. Sharp eyes followed Trixie zipping around the kitchen like a cheerful storm. This girl never learns. she muttered under her breath.
Trixie hummed, sliding on her oven mitts. Her ears perked up with excitement, and her tail swayed in wide, lazy loops. The kitchen smelled of sweet cinnamon and apples.
Shhh! She pressed a mitt-covered finger to her lips, grinning behind the glove as her eyes sparkled with mischief.
Lexi’s ears twitched with growing annoyance. Don’t you sh—
Shush shush shuuush! Trixie danced closer, waving her arms dramatically. You worry too much, bestie! This new neighbor is totally gonna be nicer than the last one! She turned, opened the oven, and proudly pulled out a golden apple pie.
Cute idiot. Lexi scoffed, though her tail uncoiled slightly. You said the same thing about the previous one. Remember? They threw your pie in the trash, and I had to throw them out of the building. We don’t need more trouble.
Trixie hesitated, eyes fixed on the warm pie in her hands. For a split second, her ears drooped and her tail slowed. The memory of that pie hitting the floor still stung. But then she shook her head, straightened her back, and smiled brightly.
This one's different. I can feel it! My tail told me so last night.
Tails don’t talk, Trixie.
Yours doesn’t. She stuck her tongue out, then skipped out of the apartment, tail wagging with excitement.
Lexi followed to the doorway but didn’t step out. She stayed leaning against the doorframe, arms folded, tail flicking warily. Her sharp gaze trailed Trixie across the hallway as she reached the neighbor’s door and knocked—pie in hand, ready to greet the new human with a warm smile. Lexi didn’t trust humans, not after everything. But if one of them hurt Trixie again, she’d be ready.
