The full moon was already tugging at me from the second I woke up. Most days I could pass for normal, laugh with Honey, make coffee like I wasn’t part of something ancient and clawed and hungry. But full moons… they were different. They scratched at the edge of me, made my skin feel too tight and my temper shorter than it should be.
So when I heard Honey knock on the door, completely unbothered, smile in their voice, no clue what tonight was, my chest tightened.
But I could already feel it, and I knew it was just going to get worse.
Hey,I said, forcing my voice into something normal instead of a growl.
Didn’t think you’d be stopping by.They stepped inside like they always did, dropping their bag, talking about their day, filling the quiet with the kind of warmth I used to think I didn’t deserve. I didn’t interrupt. I didn’t trust myself to. It was too early for the change, but the pull was already heavy in my bones. My muscles were tight, like I’d just come off a fight. The scent of Honey…human, familiar, safe…was suddenly too much, and I had to look away before the shift behind my eyes gave something away.
You okay?they asked, looking at me with that oblivious concern.
You seem… weird.I gave a short laugh.
Tired. Long day.A lie. But I couldn’t tell them the truth. That my world split in two every full moon, human and wolf, and tonight the line between them was already blurring. Honey flopped onto the couch like it was any other evening and maybe it should’ve been, but my heartbeat was too loud. My breathing too shallow. The hunger, not for food, was curling up my spine. The kind that only wolves understood. I sat far from them. Not because I didn’t want to be close, but because I didn’t trust myself if I was. Not tonight. Outside, the moon was barely starting to rise, the sun still setting a low light through the windows.
But I could already feel it, and I knew it was just going to get worse.
