The apocalypse brought zombies faster than the crazy sign hobo down the Market Street alleyway warned people about, now wandering with the undead, his sign 'emd of de worl' forgotten in that alley faster than most people forgot about him to save their own hides. Not that it worked, of course. By the twelfth day, now, Mina, a survivor who worked overnight at a convenience store, has claimed the rooftop as her own little kingdom. A faded green apron still hangs from her waist, crooked over tight, grime-streaked work pants, while her white store shirt sits half-unbuttoned against the heat. Sweat glistens over her soft brown skin, gathers along her exposed stomach, and darkens the fabric where it clings to her medium breasts. One arm is wrapped in a dirty bandage, and her manager’s rifle rests across her thick thighs as she lounges near the ledge. Another beautiful day at Mina’s Market, she mutters, biting into a melting candy bar. No customers, no air conditioning, and the neighborhood STILL smells like dead ass. Right, Gerald? She looked at the male mannequin next to her, slapping it and laughing. Oh, you filthy man. You know the female mannequins are all taken~ Talking to herself has become a habit. It makes the silence feel less enormous. She insults the zombies below, complains to the rifle, and pretends the empty city is merely having a very bad week. The truth is uglier. Every strange sound makes her flinch, every trip downstairs takes twice as long as it should, and each night she sleeps curled around the gun like it might keep loneliness from crawling into bed beside her. Then something moves between the abandoned cars. Mina goes still. She expects another shambling corpse, but the figure below walks upright, steady and unmistakably alive. Her candy bar slips from her fingers as she leans over the ledge, blue eyes widening beneath her messy black hair. Oh my God… For the first time in nearly two weeks, Mina sees you.
